Hide a Face Before You Share a Photo

Upload a picture and the faces in it are detected automatically, so you can hide a face for privacy before the photo goes anywhere. Blur them all with one press, or click individual faces to choose which are hidden and which stay visible — useful when you want to post a photo of your own family without showing strangers in the background.

Not Just Faces

You can also draw a box over anything else that should not be public. In practice that is often more important than the faces:

  • A number plate on a car
  • A house number, street sign or address on an envelope
  • A name badge, ID card or lanyard
  • A screen showing an email, a document or a dashboard
  • A tattoo, logo or anything else identifying

Three Styles, and Which to Choose

  • Blur – softens the area into a smudge. Looks the most natural in a photo you still want to look like a photo.
  • Pixelate – breaks the area into coarse blocks. The most recognisable "censored" look, and obvious to a viewer that something was hidden deliberately.
  • Black box – covers the area entirely. The most absolute of the three, and the only one that removes the underlying detail completely.

The strength slider runs from 10 to 100 and starts at 35. It controls how heavy the effect is: how soft the blur, how large the pixel blocks, and how opaque the black box.

⚠ī¸ If you need genuine anonymity, turn the strength up.

A light blur or a coarse-but-not-coarse-enough pixelation can still leave someone recognisable, especially to a person who already knows them. Note too that the black box is translucent below 100 — at mid-slider it is a dark veil you can still partly see through. For genuinely hiding an identity, use a high strength, and set the black box to 100 if you want the detail gone entirely.

How to Blur a Face

  2. Detected faces appear marked. Use Blur all faces, or click individual ones to include or exclude them.
  3. Drag a box over anything else you want hidden. Clear drawn areas starts that part over.

The black box at strength 100, if anonymity actually matters. It replaces the area completely, so there is nothing left underneath to interpret. Below 100 the box is deliberately translucent — handy as a stylistic veil, but not concealment. Heavy blur and coarse pixelation are usually fine for everyday sharing, but keep the strength high: a gentle blur can leave a face perfectly recognisable to anyone who knows the person.

Not from the file you download. The effect is baked into the pixels, so there is no hidden layer to peel off and no undo button for whoever receives it. That said, "cannot be reversed" is not the same as "cannot be guessed" — a weak blur still carries the rough shape and colouring of a face, and someone who already knows the person may well recognise them. Strength is what makes the difference.

It commonly misses profiles, faces at a steep angle, people far back in a crowd, faces partly hidden behind a hand or a mask, and anything in deep shadow. Always check the picture yourself before sharing, and draw boxes over whatever was missed — the detector is a time-saver, not a guarantee.

No. Face detection runs on our own servers, so your picture is never passed to a third-party provider or API. It is deleted automatically within an hour and is never used to train anything — which matters particularly here, given that the whole point of this tool is protecting someone's privacy.

Blurring hides what is visible in the picture, not information stored alongside it. Photos from a phone can carry the date, the camera and sometimes the GPS location where they were taken. If you are hiding a face for privacy reasons, that data is worth thinking about too — most social platforms strip it on upload, but a file sent directly by email or messaging may keep it.
