Make Your Voice Sound Different

Record something, upload it here, and pick one of eight effects to change your voice — drop it to a growl, raise it to a squeak, make a robot voice, or shift it towards male or female. How to Change Your Voice in a Recording

The Eight Effects

  • Deep Voice – drops the pitch for a darker, heavier tone. It works like slowing a tape down, so the audio also plays a little slower and ends up around a quarter longer.
  • Chipmunk – the opposite: pitch up, and noticeably faster and shorter. The classic squeaky cartoon voice.
  • Robot – multiplies your voice against a low 60 Hz tone and coarsens it, giving the flat metallic buzz of an old science-fiction computer. This is the one to pick to make a robot voice.
  • Lo-fi – drops the audio to 8 kHz and 8-bit, which is roughly telephone quality. Gritty, hissy and small, like an old radio or an intercom.
  • Echo – lays a single quieter repeat about a tenth of a second behind the original, for a hard-surfaced, room-like feel rather than a long cavernous tail.
  • Chorus / Harmonizer – adds two slightly out-of-tune, slightly delayed copies underneath, so one voice sounds like several people saying the same thing at once.
  • Formant Shift (male) – lowers the voice by three semitones while keeping the original speed and length, which is what makes it sound like a different person rather than a slowed recording.
  • Formant Shift (female) – the same in the other direction, three semitones up, again without changing the timing.

When You Might Need This

Frequently Asked Questions

Upload a recording of yourself talking and choose Robot. The effect multiplies your voice against a steady low tone and then coarsens the result, which strips out the natural variation in your pitch — that flatness is what the ear reads as mechanical. It works best on clear, close speech; a noisy recording just sounds like noisy robot.

One of the two Formant Shift options. They move your voice up or down by three semitones without touching the speed, so the result still sounds like a person talking normally — just not you. Deep Voice and Chipmunk are more obviously effects: entertaining, but nobody will mistake them for a real voice.

Because it works the way slowing down a record does — pitch and speed move together, so a deeper voice is also a slower one, ending up roughly a quarter longer. Chipmunk does the same in reverse and comes out shorter. If you want the pitch changed but the timing left alone, use a Formant Shift instead, which separates the two.

The preview only processes the first twelve seconds so that it comes back quickly. Every effect here applies evenly across the whole recording, so those twelve seconds tell you exactly what the rest will sound like. Your full-length audio is processed when you download — nothing is trimmed from the result.

No — this works on a file you have already recorded, not on a live microphone feed. Real-time voice changing for calls and games needs software installed on your computer that sits between your microphone and the app. Record first, transform here, then share the result.

You get a WAV, which is uncompressed — so a small MP3 going in can come back as a file many times larger. That is normal, and it keeps the effect from being degraded by a second round of compression. If you need something compact to send or upload, run the result through Convert Audio to turn it into an MP3.

You can apply any of them to music, though they were built with voices in mind. Lo-fi and Echo suit music perfectly well. Deep Voice and Chipmunk will shift the whole track out of key, since they change the pitch of everything at once — occasionally the point, but worth knowing before you try it on a song.
