  3. Press stop — the translation appears. Copy it, or press Listen to hear it spoken.

Three AI Models, One Button

What looks like a single action is actually three pieces of AI working in sequence:

  1. Speech recognition turns what you said into text, and works out which language it was.
  2. Neural machine translation rewrites that text in the language you chose — reading the whole sentence before writing anything, which is how it gets word order and grammar right rather than swapping words one at a time.
  3. Speech synthesis reads the translation aloud in a natural voice, so you can let someone else hear it.

All three run on our own server. Your voice is not sent to Google, Apple or any other translation service, and nothing is kept after the request. That is unusual for a voice translator — most of them are a front end for somebody else's API, which means every word you speak is handed to a company whose terms you have not read.

Four Languages, in Any Direction

This translates between English, Spanish, French and German — any of the four into any other. It is worth being clear about that before you rely on it: if you are travelling somewhere that speaks Japanese, Arabic, Turkish, Thai or Portuguese, this is not the tool for that trip.

Within those four it works well, and you do not have to tell it which one you are speaking. It listens and works that out, choosing only from the languages it can actually translate — so a Spanish speaker is not mistaken for a Portuguese one and then refused.

When You Might Need This

It works in both directions, and which one matters more depends on the situation.

When you need to say something:

  • Talking to a neighbour, colleague or customer in their own language
  • A longer conversation with someone you share no language with, taking it in turns
  • Interviewing or questioning someone who answers in another language
  • Explaining what you need at a desk, a counter or an appointment
  • Saying a phrase you know the words for but not the pronunciation — hold the phone out and let it say it properly
  • Asking for directions, a price or a platform number while travelling
  • Anywhere typing is awkward, such as when your hands are full or it is raining

When someone speaks to you:

  • A colleague, client or neighbour saying something you did not catch
  • Checking you have understood what you were just told, before you act on it
  • A member of staff explaining a rule, a delay or a change
  • Something on the television, the radio or a podcast
  • An announcement at an airport or a station
  • A shopkeeper, waiter, driver or host speaking their own language

For the second kind, set the target language to your own, hold the phone towards whoever is speaking, and record. The translation comes back as text you can read and as speech you can play.

It is also a good way to practise a language: say a sentence, see whether it came out as the words you meant, and listen to how it should sound.
